  14.         <text><span class="style42"></span><span class="style12">WESTERN SAMOA</span><span class="style14"></span><span class="style42">Official names:</span><span class="style13"> The Independent State of Western Samoa and Malo SaΓÇÖoloto TutoΓÇÖatasi o Samoa i Sisifo</span><span class="style42">Member of: </span><span class="style13">UN, Commonwealth</span><span class="style42">Area: </span><span class="style13">2831 km2 (1093 sq mi)</span><span class="style42">Population: </span><span class="style13">163000 (1993 est)</span><span class="style42">Capital: </span><span class="style13">Apia 33000 (1991 census)</span><span class="style42">Languages: </span><span class="style13">English and Samoan (official)</span><span class="style42">Religions: </span><span class="style13">Congregational (47%), Roman Catholic (22%), Methodist</span><span class="style42">GOVERNMENT</span><span class="style13">Forty-seven of the 49 members of the  Assembly (Fono) are elected for five years by universal adult suffrage. Only members of the Matai (the elected clan leaders) are eligible to stand for election. The other two members of the Assembly are elected by non-Samoan residents. The current head of state is analogous to a constitutional monarch, but future heads of state will be elected for a five-year term by the Assembly. The head of state appoints a Prime Minister, who, in turn, appoints a Council of Ministers.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">The country consists of seven small islands and two larger and higher volcanic islands. </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">The islands have a tropical climate with high temperatures and very heavy rainfall.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">The majority of Samoans are involved in subsistence agriculture. Copra (from coconuts), cocoa and bananas are the main exports. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">Tala.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">Samoa was settled by Polynesians about 300 BC. From the 1870s the USA, UK and Germany became active in Samoa. In 1899 the three rival powers divided the group, giving the western islands to Germany. New Zealand occupied the German islands in 1914, and administered Western Samoa until independence in 1962. A large proportion of the economically active population has emigrated to New Zealand.</span></text>
